Car Upgrades: How to Make the Most Out of Moulded Carpet Sets

Jun
Carpet is the material of choice for almost any floor when comfort and sound insulation need to be prevalent. The same is done not just in your home but also in your vehicle, as the same type of material is used to make you feel like you’re at home.
Car carpets are slightly different, though, as they are made to fit the shape of the floor, which, in a car, is not all flat. The carpet is heated and then pressed into the exact shape for the model car it’s meant for, so that it contours to it without issue. Automotive carpet is more than just a material that makes your car cosier, it also acts as the base for the mats and is able to enhance your driving experience in many ways.

Preparation
While installing new car carpets is not rocket science, the process does require you to prepare your vehicle for it. The very first step involves taking out all the door sill plates, front and rear seat base, consoles, seat belt bolts and kick panels before you install your new moulded car carpet set.
Removal
Next comes the removal of the old carpet, which needs to be done with care as you’ll need it for later. Make sure to also remove the underfelt and make note of its position.
Once you’ve removed the current carpet and its underfelt, make sure to put them aside and then clean the bare floor. This is done by first vacuuming it and then going over it with a damp cloth. When it’s dried off, it’s time to install the new moulded car carpet set.
Installation
Installing the carpet set you got for your vehicle means starting by putting in the new underfelt first. Make sure it’s in the exact same position as the previous one was. Take your time here as you need to get this right, and you only have one go at it.
Before you place the new carpet on the floor, though, make sure to place it over the old one first. This is done so that you can mark all the holes necessary for the base of the seats and seatbelt bolts. Make the cutouts small, so that they can be corrected if needed, and then you’re ready to install the new carpet.
When the underfelt is placed and the new carpet is cut up, start by placing it over the underfelt from the rear first and then make your way to the centre of the transmission tunnel so that you end up at the sides.
The same step needs to be repeated for the front carpet too, so that the holes on it and on the rest of the carpeting can then be enlarged if they’re not big enough. You might also need to trim any sides of the carpet if there is any excess material that’s bent up. Finally, put all the trim pieces and the seats in your vehicle, and you’re done.
Cleaning Car Carpets and Mats

Vacuum
Cleaning is an important part of making sure that both your carpet and custom car mats are usable for a long time. It all starts off by vacuuming both the mats and the carpet. Take out the mats and start by vacuuming the carpet by going over it with a soft-bristle brush to get more of the debris and dust stuck in it. The same is done to the mats if they are made of the same material.
Carpet Cleaner/Washing
When it comes to cleaning carpets, even if it’s the mats, you should use automotive carpet cleaner after vacuuming them. This type of solution is applied to the carpet so that it can sit for about 30 minutes before you use a brush to work it into the material.
Make sure to do so thoroughly so that you get into every corner of carpet and/or mats. Once done, you should then use a clean cloth to remove any residue, and afterwards you should use an absorbent cloth to take off the moisture left on them.
If you have other types of mats, like rubber or vinyl ones, then washing them with a hose and soapy water and then rinsing them down is going to be enough.
Vacuum Again
When both the mats and carpet are cleaned up, go over them with the vacuum cleaner, especially the floor. This way, you will extract even more moisture and make sure that the floor and mats are clean of both dirt and dust, as well as carpet cleaner or soap residue.
Drying
Once done with the vacuuming for the second time, you should then let the material dry off on its own or speed up the process, but never use a cloth or blow dry it. If your custom car mats are not made of carpet, you can dry them off yourself with a blow dryer or a dry cloth.
